ایجاد و گسترش سکونتگاه‌های روستایی تحت تاثیر عوامل گوناگونی است، این عوامل به دو دسته عوامل طبیعی و انسانی تقسیم می‌شوند، که تاثیر آنها بر ساخت و الگوی این سکونتگاه­ها غیرقابل انکار است. تغییرات صورت گرفته در الگو و شیوه معماری مسکن روستایی بسیار زیاد و به شکل‌های مختلفی رخ داده است. بررسی نقش عوامل طبیعی و انسانی در الگوی مسکن روستایی و تعیین میزان همبستگی این عوامل با مسکن روستایی هدف عمده پژوهش حاضر می باشد. روش تحقیق در این مطالعه از نظر هدف کاربردی و از نظر روش توصیفی تحلیلی می­باشد. در بخش اول نتیجه مطالعات نشان می‌دهد، عوامل طبیعی نقش بسیار موثری در­ الگوی مسکن روستایی در این منطقه داشته است. از این رو در بین عوامل طبیعی، توپوگرافی خاص منطقه، نقش پر رنگتری نسبت به دیگر عوامل محیطی داشته‌ است. در بین عوامل انسانی نیز  عامل فرهنگی_اجتماعی بیشترین تاثیر را بر الگوی مسکن روستایی داشته است. جامعه آماری تحقیق 5 روستای پلکانی شهرستان خلخال با 10650 نفر جمعیت در قالب 1940 خانوار می‌باشد. حجم نمونه از طریق فرمول کوکران 320 خانوار روستایی انتخاب شده است، که به صورت نمونه‌گیری تصادفی مورد پرسشگری قرار گرفتهاند. برای تحلیل داده‌ها از روش همبستگی پیرسون و اسپیرمن و رگرسون چند متغیره با استفاده از نرم افزار SPSS کمک گرفته شده است. نتایج حاصل نشان میدهد که ارتباط معنیدار و نسبتا قوی با ضریب 675/0 بین عوامل انسانی و الگوی مسکن روستایی در محدوده مورد مطالعه وجود دارد، به نحوی که شاخص فرهنگی اجتماعی حدود 8/58 درصد بر الگوی مسکن را تبیین میکند.
